Local marine scientists in the making

GeelongPort is proud to continue its commitment to the environment and community through a new STEM education program, School Citizen Scientists with Marine Mammal Foundation.

More than 250 year 7 and 8 students from Northern Bay College recently became citizen scientists for the day. Along the Queenscliff beach the students learnt about the marine mammals swimming in our oceans and bays. The students collected macro plastics from the area and calculated how many years they would take to start breaking down and their impacts on the water and marine life. Diving deep into scientist life the students prevented micro plastics from entering the waterways.

The School Citizen Scientists program gave students the opportunity to further develop their STEM learning outside of the classroom in one of our picturesque beachside towns.
