GeelongPort launches 2024 Sustainability Report

GeelongPort today launched its 2024 Sustainability Report highlighting its unwavering commitment to environmental, social and governance leadership.

GeelongPort is proud to integrate sustainability as a core strategic focus across its operations, partnerships and community engagement.

This year’s report highlights GeelongPort’s significant achievements, including its third consecutive five-star rating in the globally recognised GRESB Infrastructure Asset Benchmark, which assesses the sustainability performance of infrastructure assets. With a maintained score of 97 out of 100, GeelongPort continues to rank in the top 20% of GRESB organisations worldwide – an outstanding testament to its international leadership in sustainability.

Additionally, GeelongPort achieved a major milestone in its decarbonisation journey. Reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 31% against the 2023 financial year and an impressive 91% against its baseline in the 2018 financial year.

This success is underpinned by the integration of the port’s award-winning power purchase agreement which now supplies 100% of GeelongPort’s purchased energy through renewable resources, allowing GeelongPort to reach reduction targets ahead of schedule.

Brett Winter Chief Executive Officer of GeelongPort emphasised the port’s continued commitment to sustainability.

“We are proud to be at the forefront of Australia’s decarbonisation efforts and remain committed to our target of limiting climate change by 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2050,” he said.

“Sustainability is more than a goal – its embedded in everything we do, from strategic planning to asset management to how we engage with our stakeholders.”

An innovative circular process for asphalt saw GeelongPort recycle 1,075 tonnes of asphalt at Lascelles Wharf and recycle the asphalt in an uneven section of the same precinct. Prior to reusing asphalt on-site, the GeelongPort team sent 1,415 tonnes of used asphalt to a local asphalt supplier who used the material as a component in their Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP) mixes.

GeelongPort’s strategic location and infrastructure have enabled it to play a pivotal role in supporting Australia’s renewable energy transition. Over the past year, the port facilitated the movement of more than 650,000 tonnes of Vestas wind farm cargo for the Golden Plains Wind Farm.

This year, GeelongPort marked another milestone in its journey towards reconciliation, launching its Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) in partnership with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation.

“Our sustainability journey reflects our long-term vision to be Australia’s most sustainable port while creating lasting value for our customers, community and the environment,” Mr Winter said.
