As Australians prepare to celebrate the festive season, GeelongPort is reminding everyone that this time of year is not only about giving gifts, but also about giving back.
Through a partnership with social enterprise PonyUp for Good, GeelongPort has delivered a powerful combination of environmental and social impact, turning old technology into meals for Australians facing food insecurity.
On 6 November, GeelongPort collected 126 kilograms of retired technology from across its operations as part of PonyUp for Good’s sustainability program.
While the decommissioned equipment could not be reused, it was responsibly recycled with up to 90% diversion from landfill, ensuring valuable materials will be recovered and repurposed into new products rather than contributing to waste.
The initiative goes beyond recycling. PonyUp for Good works with SecondBite, one of Australia’s leading food rescue charities, to convert recycling efforts into meals for people in need.
Thanks to GeelongPort’s contribution, 214 meals have been donated to SecondBite, providing essential support to Australians on the front line of food poverty.
GeelongPort CEO Brett Winter said the festive season is the perfect time to reflect on how ESG principles can deliver meaningful value in a simple, yet practical way.
“GeelongPort is proud to support initiatives that deliver real change for both the environment and the community, especially at a time of year when giving matters most.”
“The festive season is a time for generosity and reflection, and this initiative demonstrates how small actions can create big change.”
PonyUp for Good is a certified social enterprise that partners with businesses to repurpose or recycle retired technology, reducing landfill and funding meals for Australians doing it tough. SecondBite rescues surplus fresh food and redistributes it to community food programs across the country.
