More than 100 children across Geelong’s northern suburbs will have the opportunity to build confidence, develop essential movement skills and experience the benefits of active play through a new partnership between GeelongPort and Leisure Networks.
With GeelongPort’s support, the MiniMovers initiative will be delivered free of charge to 101 children attending early learning centres in Norlane, Corio, Lara and Herne Hill.
Delivered by Leisure Networks, the program uses sport, movement and play-based activities to help children develop fundamental physical literacy skills including catching, throwing, kicking, running, jumping and balancing. These early experiences provide the foundation for lifelong participation in sport, recreation and healthy, active lifestyles.
Each MiniMovers session includes a warm-up, movement-based games and activities focused on a specific skill, along with opportunities for children to develop teamwork, communication, active listening and problem-solving skills. A different sport is introduced each week, encouraging children to explore new activities and build confidence through play.
The program also provides opportunities for educators and families to participate, helping reinforce learning beyond the sessions and supporting children to continue developing their skills at home and in their early learning environments.
