Earlier this year, GeelongPort completed pavement rehabilitation works on sections of road at Corio Quay North and Lascelles Wharf after detailed pavement investigations identified opportunities to optimise the existing pavement structure to support future operational demands.
Through GeelongPort’s procurement process for this project, the business elected to utilise in-situ foamed bitumen stabilisation treatments to recycle and strengthen the existing pavement, reducing the need to remove and replace large volumes of asphalt and granular material.
The treatment involves milling the existing pavement, blending the recovered materials with foamed bitumen and hydrated lime, and re-compacting the material to create a strong and durable pavement layer.
Compared with traditional deep-lift asphalt reconstruction, in-situ stabilisation provides a significantly more sustainable outcome.
By adopting this approach, GeelongPort:
-
recycled 4000 tonnes of materials which would otherwise have been disposed of
-
reduced heavy vehicle travel by 1000 kilometres
-
saved 3000 litres of diesel consumption.
In addition, the two projects delivered a 53% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
With the works now complete, GeelongPort has delivered a solution that structurally supports ongoing port operations while significantly reducing environmental impacts, demonstrating how infrastructure investment can deliver both operational and sustainability outcomes.
