GeelongPort

GeelongPort has become the first port in Australia to achieve Climate Active carbon neutral certification for its business operations in FY2021.

GeelongPort made the decision to go carbon neutral as we as a business acknowledge that climate change is one of the major risks currently facing communities globally.

Reaching carbon neutrality was one of the long-term objectives in our 20-year environment strategy released in 2019. This strategy details our long-term emissions reduction objectives, including having all energy drawn from renewable sources and offsetting all carbon emissions.

GeelongPort is doing what it can now while investing in longer term decarbonisation initiatives.

In 2020-21 GeelongPort is sourcing renewable energy for some of its electricity needs and will soon have 100 per cent of its electricity sourced from renewable energy. It is also investing in climate action projects in Australia and around the world that are providing economic/social/environmental benefits to communities, as well as reducing emissions.

Other things we are doing to reduce emissions include:

  • partnering with Barwon Water and Barwon Health to form the Barwon Region Renewable Energy Project (BRREP) to transition towards 100 per cent renewable electricity and zero net emissions through the implementation of a Power Purchase Agreement
  • committing to build shore power infrastructure and potential to connect Spirit of Tasmania’s new vessels, supporting the ability for these vessels to be powered with 100% renewable energy when at berth
  • being the first port in Australia to make a voluntary commitment to the Science-based Targets Initiative (SBTi) to reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% by 2030 and to measure and reduce scope 3 emissions
  • purchasing GreenPower Electricity
  • completing an Energy, Water and Carbon Audit of the facility
  • completing the installation of seven data loggers on major water meters at GeelongPort facilities
  • replacing virgin office paper with 100% recycled paper, moving toward paperless operations and enhancing our digital technology capabilities

Climate Active is a rigorous, government-backed carbon neutral certification which includes an independent audit and encourages businesses to drive voluntary climate action.

Climate Active certification is awarded to businesses and organisations that have credibly reached a state of achieving net zero emissions, otherwise known as carbon neutrality. This means that the activities associated with running a business or producing a particular product have no net negative impact on the climate.
